New York to recognize out-of-state gay marriage

ALBANY , N.Y. (AP) — Same-sex marriages legally performed

elsewhere will be recognized in New York

.

Equality Maine Press Release, May 15, 2008

“While same-sex couples in Maine are unaffected legally by this ruling,

we are hopeful that here in Maine , we will someday have the same

opportunity to solidify our families.” said Betsy Smith, Executive Director, EqualityMaine.

Marriage is as old as civilization itself. Consider the words of Augustine (354 – 430):

“The first natural bond of human society, therefore, is that of husband and wife. God did not create them as separate individuals...but he created one from the other, making the side, from which the woman was taken and formed, a sign of the strength of their union. For those who walk together, and look ahead together to where they are walking, do so at each other's side. The result is the bonding of society in its children."

Augustine, “The Excellence of Marriage,” Marriage and Virginity, in The Works of Saint Augustine: A Translation for the 21st Century, pt. 1, vol. 1, trans. Ray Kearny, (Hyde Park, NY: New City Press, 1999), 33. In other translations see: Book 1, Chapter 1.

After centuries of this “bonding of society”, secular progressives are entering into a social experiment that will have a tsunami affect on generations of Americans. We must preserve marriage in Maine! Our actions now will be judged by generations to come.
